Martinsitic stainless steel takes a high polish while having substantial mechanical properties including hardness, wear resistance and machinability. An exemplary application is so-called lens quality steel. The term lens quality means, as used in this application and with reference to the plastic forming industry, a steel which, when formed into a mold, is capable of taking, and retaining over a long period of use, a high polish. This super metal has an ultimate yield strength of 2000 MPa verses 1400 MPa for Reynolds 853 and 800 MPa for 4130 chrome-moly steel. 3Al-2.5V titanium has ultimate yield strength of 900 MPa. When you take in account the densities of steel and titanium, you find that the strength to weight ratio of 953 is 256 verses 3-2.5 Ti at 200. One of the main advantages of 953 is that a frame can be made with oversized tubing without a penalty in weight. This builds a stiff and super light frame that retains the liveliness and feel of high quality steel. Another advantage is its corrosion resistance. Thin wall steel is susceptible to rust. This will not be an issue with Reynolds 953 due to its high corrosion resistance.

The XS is made out of custom carbon fiber composite tubes and a carbon fiber monostay and fork made exclusively for IF by Reynolds Composites. All IF designed and manufactured shot peened titanium lugs were developed to maximize strength, minimize weight, deliver optimum performance and incredible style. The carbon tubes are bonded into the custom lugs with high tech, high strength epoxies. These are the same epoxies used throughout the aerospace industry in applications where maximum strength and durability are required. The the dropouts are done in custom machined 6/4 ti. The Planet Cross was designed by Lloyd Graves, an active 'cross racer, who sought to develop his ideal racer which would address the shortcomings he saw in other 'cross racers. The Planet Cross was ridden by Johs Huseby to the National Collegiate Championship in October of 1996, just prior to its formal introduction at the 1996 Interbike in Anaheim.
